General Election 2010

I have a problem with the election.

I don't know who to vote for.

Actually, that's a lie. I do know who to vote for, but I can't. Kinda.

Let me explain. In Britain we have 3 main political parties and then the Independent ones as well. In most areas there are candidates for Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrats (Lib Dem). You will also now find candidates for the Green party as well. Yes, there are also loads of other parties, but for fear of forgetting one, I won't mention any of the smaller ones. (We all know about BNP and UKIP but for various reasons I won't comment on those at all other than saying that I will NEVER vote for either of those.)

Anyway, my problem is thus. It's no secret I like Lib Dem. I agree with them most, which means that they're the party I should vote for. I also think the Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg is awesome and will make a great Prime Minister. However, I can't vote for Lib Dem in my area. Well, I can, but I won't because the Lib Dem candidate in my area is pretty useless. My current MP is good and actually does stuff for our town, but he's a Labour MP. As it is, the Lib Dem guy in my area won't get elected, there are too many who like our current MP, so that would be a wasted vote anyway.

BUT my point is: why can't I vote for an MP who is going to take my views to the right people etc and will actually do something for my town, but also vote for who I want in charge of the country? I love my MP because he does his job right, but he's just with the wrong party I want in charge of the country!

But the thing is, I want Lib Dem in charge of the country, but I really don't like the Lib Dem guy in my area! He's a moron and doesn't do anything! My current MP is really nice and really good. Problem is, he's with the wrong party!

Yes. I REALLY want a Lib Dem govt but I really DON'T want our Lib Dem MP! As it is in my town our current MP is likely to be re-elected, which is fine and would make no difference with my vote or not anyway but the Lib Dems just need more seats everywhere. This is my problem. If I could vote for my area and then for who I want in charge then no problem, but as it is, I'm going to have to end up voting Labour because I really don't like the Lib Dem guy at home!

Whatever my personal views, and indeed efforts, I believe we will not have a Lib Dem majority government, and that the best the Liberals can reasonably expect is a hung parliament, probably largely dependent on the outcomes of the two remaining debates. I am unconvinced by Mr Clegg's leadership capability. He is fairly unmemorable on the whole. He is a persuasive and fairly charismatic speaker, if his delivery leaves something to be desired. Very Blair-like. If your local MP is a good one and the party you support have no hope of winning that seat (and since the Lib Dem candidate doesn't sound reliable), I recommend electing the person you trust the most. If his majority is secure from Tory and other influence your vote for the Liberals would boost their statistics and consequently their influence. It's a consequence-consideration situation.

Here, my primary goal is keeping out one party in particular, and that is a sad situation in which to find oneself. I have never involved myself in party politics in the past so my vote will always go for the person who I believe will most benefit the area s/he stands for.

I agree that the likelihood of Lib Dem majority govt is very slim, I assume that the most they'll get is coalition govt, but it's better than nothing. I will end up voting for my MP because despite liking Lib Dem, I know he does some good and he's a good person.

It's always a sad state of affairs where one is forced to vote to keep one party out...
